You have four options for writing the exam.
Option 1: Testing Centre
Option 2: Write the exam by mail
Option 3: Write the exam by e-mail
Option 4: Write the exam online
Option 1: Testing Centre
Write the exam at any participating St. John Ambulance testing centre (or at any of 150 freecourse.ca testing centres) located in communities across Canada. To arrange to write your exam, please see our list of Testing Centres and select the one nearest you.
Options 2 and 3: Write the exam by mail or by e-mail
If you are not located near one of our testing centres, you may write the exam by mail (called a proctored exam). The exam can be forwarded to your proctor either by conventional mail (Canada Post) or by electronic mail (e-mail). Proctored exams are managed for St. John Ambulance by freecourse.ca, a Canadian Coast Guard accredited course provider. To write a proctored (supervised) exam by mail or e-mail, we need to be able to send the exam to somebody who can serve as your proctor (exam supervisor) and who is not related to the person or persons writing the exam by birth or marriage, and who belongs to any of the following professions:
Peace officer or by-law officer
Lawyer, justice of the peace, or officer of the court
Clergy person
Elected representative

Doctor, nurse, paramedic, or firefighter
A member of some generally recognised professional organisation, such as: professional engineer, engineering technologist, or chartered accountant.
School principal or a person holding a teaching license.
The information required from the proctor for a correspondence exam is:

Proctor's mailing address with postal code:
Proctor's phone number:
Proctor's e-mail address:

Proctor's occupation:
Proctor's employer:
Proctor's employer's address:

The above information can be forwarded by you or by your proctor via e-mail to support@safetyafloat.ca. If the proctor that you propose is accepted, we will explain their duties to them and arrange for them to receive your exam materials by mail or by e-mail. The cost of a proctored exam is $25 (price includes applicable taxes, exam, and permanent official Pleasure Craft Operator Card).
