Our online exam is awaiting approval by the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG). The CCG is delaying approval of any new service until it completes an investigation of how other online exam providers verify that their online exams are supervised. The investigation has been underway for more than a year. We do not know how long this process will take. However, you can write the official operator exam now, on paper, with any of our 150 testing centres and agents (listed on our Testing Centres page: http://safetyafloat.ca/centres.php).

If you are not near a freecourse.ca testing centre or agent, it is possible to write a paper exam by mail (a proctored exam) if it is supervised by your proctor (Coast Guard requirement). To write a proctored exam, we need to be able to send the exam to somebody (the proctor) who is NOT related to the person or persons writing the exam by birth or marriage, and who belongs to a professional group (licensed teacher, principal, college instructor, nurse, doctor, pharmacist, engineer, engineering technologist, architect, lawyer, court clerk, commissioner of oaths, officer of the court, police officer, by-law officer, fire fighter, paramedic, chartered accountant, an elected person, mayor, city clerk, or clergy person).

The above information must be forwarded by you or by the proctor, preferably via e-mail (support@safetyafloat.ca) in advance of receiving the exam.

If the proctor that you propose is accepted, we will explain their duties to them and arrange for them to receive the exam materials (includes instructions, the exam, answer sheet, and correction key). The cost of a proctored exam is $25 (price includes applicable taxes, Temporary Operator Card, and permanent Canadian Coast Guard Pleasure Craft Operator Card). Payment can be made by phone using a credit card (Visa only) or by mail using a cheque (payable to freecourse.ca). If paying by cheque, payment can be sent in with the corrected answer sheet after the exam has been written.
